Croatian and Swedish flags – on the occasion of Croatian Flag Day on June 5th and Swedish Flag Day on June 6th

In the dome of the Zagreb City Library on Starčević Square in Zagreb, organized by the Croatian-Swedish Society and the Libraries of the City of Zagreb, a lecture by Željko Heimer was held on the occasion of Croatian Flag Day on June 5 and Swedish Flag Day on June 6.

The lecture compared the historical origins of the Croatian and Swedish national flags, their different histories, reminded us of the fact that the Swedish Military Museum keeps the oldest preserved Croatian flags, and compared the way the flag is used in both countries. The lecture particularly examined the circumstances of the origin and development of National Flag Day, which has been a national holiday in Sweden since 1983, although it has been celebrated since 1893, while in Croatia it was only declared in 2018 by four national heritage institutions and is still in the process of being introduced into the official state calendar.

The lecture was held in memory of Mr. Vladimir Ivanišević, president of the Croatian-Swedish Society, who recently left us suddenly.
