Together with the design company Meleagrina from Vrboce, HGZD published a valuable monograph by the young historian Ana Marija Ambrušec, titled »Heraldička baština križevačko-kalničkog područja« (Heraldic Heritage of Križevci and Kalnik Region). Her book developed from her graduate thesis fdefended at the History Department of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of Zagreb, presenting research of coats of arms, mostly of the Kalnik nobility, a characteristic form of “petty” nobility which enjoyed certain small benefits, working land and defending the region.

From the Preface by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tomislav Galović we copy (translation HGZD web editor):

The Croatian heraldic heritage preserved in numerous archives, museums and libraries as well as on public and private places, is a large area of research waiting for experts, zealot workers and promoters. Although already in the late 19th century the regions of continental Croatia were presented in a capital work – the heraldic collection by Ivan Bojničić Kninski (1858 – 1925)published in German language as Der Adel von Kroatien und Slavonien („Nobility of Croatia and Slavonia“) printed in Nürnberg in 1899 as part of the famous series of the »J. Siebmacher’s grosses und allgemeines Wappenbuch« (IV, 13) –it left more than enough space for new research of this valuable segment of Croatian and European history.

The book, i.e. the monograph Heraldic Heritage of Križevci and Kalnik Region that we have in front of us continues in that path, enriching it, beng result of research work and diligence of Ana Marija Ambrušec, a historian graduated from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of Zagreb. The heraldic heritage of continental Croatia is a specific area of research, providing fields for new discoveries and sequentially also new historiographic results. Unlike the region of eastern Adriatic (and its larger cities), that were researched into greater depth, the heraldic heritage of the Križevci and Kalnik region is a new research challenge. This work puts its nobility and theri heritage in the centre, from the Middle to the Early Modern Age.

The monograph is conceived and produced and a review, a recapitulation, but also original archival research of historic sources and field work of the region concentrating to the heraldic monuments that were mostly unresearched and unknown so far. Therefore, the work is an excellent contribution to the research of the Križevci and Kalnik heraldic heritage in the Middle and Early Modern Ages. It is published in cooperation of Meleagrina from Vrbovec and very agile Croatian Heraldic and Vexillological Society in Zagreb, which immidiately recognized its value, and with financial support of the Community of Kalnik.
