On 10 July 2018 the HGZD president LTC Dr Željko Heimer held in the Coordination of Croatian Friendship Societies the second lecture of the cycle “Flags of European and World Countries”, held under auspices of the President of the Republic Ms. Kolinda Grabar Kitarović. This time the topic was the flags of the PR China.
The choice of China for the second lecture in the cycle has also a vexillological reasoning. While flag-like objects (vexilloids) appeared around the world in all civilizations, the flags composed of textile hoisting part attached to a pole were first used in China. We know of 16th century BCE carvings depicting such flag, and there are 2nd century BCE murals of funeral processions using flags that look as much as we know them in Modern Age. Such flags reached Europe slowly through cultural exchange only after the Islamic expansion, where we know of them at least since 10th century AD.
