Nazor Čorda on Festival of Artistic Flags Zagreb

At the headquarters of the Brothers of the Croatian Dragon (DBHZ) in the Tower above the Stone Gate on 18 September 2024, a lecture by Dr. Art. Dijana Nazor Čorda “Festival of Artistic Flags Zagreb (FUZZ)” was held, co-organized by the Croatian Heraldic and Vexillological Society and the Art Section of the DBHZ.

The lecture presented the origin and course of the International Festival of Artistic Flags, which after eleven years of operation changed its name to the Festival of Artistic Flags Zagreb (FUZZ) with the support of the Zagreb City Tourist Board. This unique festival left a recognizable mark in Croatia, but also beyond, with the concept of small, unique artistic flags. It was created as part of the International Street Festival Cest is d’Best. Around 270 artists from 20 countries from five continents participated in the Festival. The festival took place for 13 years (from 2009 to 2021) in the very center of Zagreb on Ban Josip Jelačić Square, Zrinjevac and on European Square. The Festival’s holdings include around 500 artistic flags painted and made in various techniques and materials. In this lecture, we recalled this unique event, the guests of honor, the awarded artists and their works, the jury members and the large open-air exhibition, which has delighted the citizens of Zagreb and visitors to the Festival for years. Numerous children’s creative workshops took place both within and outside the Flag Festival. The festival influenced several cities in Croatia, which, inspired by FUZZ, exhibited their children’s flags in the city center. In this way, Zagreb’s positive vibrations of art in the wind spread throughout our beautiful country.
