Lecture on “Croatian flags from the Thirty Years’ War”

On May 21, 2024, the President of the Croatian Heraldic and Vexillological Association Željko Heimer, held a lecture on “Croatian flags from the Thirty Years’ War – in the Swedish Military Museum in Stockholm” in cooperation with the Croatian-Swedish Society, at the premises of the Croatian Nobility Association, Teslina ul. 13/1, Zagreb.

Lecture summary
Croatian heritage is very rich and largely unexplored. Among the oldest preserved flags used by Croats throughout their turbulent history are those kept in the Military Museum in Stockholm, and originate from the Croatian light cavalry units that fought in the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648). The Croatian dragoon regiments led by prominent Croatian nobles achieved a high reputation in that war, and their rare captured flags formed a proud part of the Royal Trophy Collection. In terms of their shape, they are among some of the more unusual flags. In addition to the Thirty Years’ War period, Colonel Heimer will provide a brief overview of Croatian military flags throughout history, from the time of the national rulers to the Homeland War.

Unfortunately, shortly before the lecture, the president of the Croatian-Swedish Society, Vladimir Ivanišević, who was also the organizer of this event, suddenly passed away. According to his family’s wishes, the lecture was held, with a brief joint remembrance of the deceased Vlatko.
