Dear Reader,
While in the editorial of the previous issue I “complained” that I had a feeling of time passing slowly because of the multitude of events we had during that period, this time I could write the opposite – it seems to me that we have had very little activity since then and that time has flown by. If that were not so, it would be easy to see in our Chronicle at the end of each issue, but the fact is that it would be difficult to reach the same intensity as before.
Some works have been published in scientific periodicals, several public lectures have been held, and perhaps most importantly, after a break of several years, lectures on Croatian heraldic heritage have resumed at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Studies, as well as a heraldic course at the Faculty of Croatian Studies at the University of Zagreb.
I am pleased to present the usual columns that our valuable contributors regularly write. Galović’s topic is Pero Čimbur, probably the most prolific designer of municipal coats of arms during the socialist period in these regions, but also one of the rare popularizers of these disciplines at the time. Kuščić tells us of the Fabijanić family from the island of Pag and their intriguing coat of arms. Peran shows us how Illyrian heraldry influenced the design of new noble coats of arms from the 18th century during the Habsburg Monarchy. Horvat shows us the military banderial flags of Croatian magnates from the 15th century. Vitez continues with an overview of the emblems and flags of county football associations in Croatia. Barić this time presents us with the flags of the historical unit from Varaždin with the help of his colleague Selec from that unit. Todorović updates us with information on new flags and coats of arms of countries around the world.
We are already used to occasional contributions by Božić, who on this occasion examines the coat of arms of Metković, which although relatively new, has quite deep roots. And finally, our colleague Mihajlo Vitezović from the Belgrade Academy of Arts joins us with his interesting contribution examining the coats of arms of the Iločki (Újlaki), the last titular kings of Bosnia.
Finally, we now have an almost regular short overview of new coats of arms in the Church, which would be incomplete if we did not include the coat of arms of the newly elected Pope Leo XIV.
I am convinced that this time we are again bringing very diverse materials among which everyone will find at least something of interest. In this issue we write about coats of arms and flags from various historical periods as well as modern and completely new ones, we consider our disciplines from different points of view, and most importantly, we write in a way that is accessible to a wide audience not only in our homeland, but also around the world.
I hope you enjoy reading GiZ,
Željko Heimer
