On Thursday, January 20th, 2011, Željko Heimer, the HGZD president, held a visiting lecture with topic “The Coat of Arms and the Flag of the Republic of Croatia” for the history students at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb, at the Department of History, the Auxiliary History Sciences and the History Methodology Division, as part of the regular syllabus of the undergraduate course the Auxiliary History Sciences 2, lectured by Prof. Mirjana Matijević Sokol, PhD. Beside the basic lecture topic – the review of the Croatian state arms history, the emergence of the current arms and flag of Croatia and the issues of their legal definition and practical use, he also briefly acquainted the students with the activities of the HGZD and the “Grb i zastava” journal (issues of which were given to the students at the occasion). Presenting parts of the lecture on water in the Croatian municipal heraldry, he also attempted to show a method for use of the heraldic research as basis for research of social identity, i.e. of use of heraldry as tool producing a wider picture of society in certain period.
