Split, which flag are you hoisting?
On 26 April 2019, Željko Heimer held a lecture titled »Croatian municipal Heraldry and the Flags of the City of Split«.The lecture was held as part of the ongoing exhibition of the Split Museum Coats of Arms of Split – Stone Coatof Arms from the Split City Museum, white an introductory lecture Coats of arms of Split was given by Elvira Šarić Kostić, senior custodian and the exhibition autor.
Heimer presented the development of municipal vexillology (flags of cities and communities) in Croatia since the 12th cnetury, as a frame reference to the development of Split flags. The flags of Split were recorded in the 16th century in the navigation charts, they are mentioned in manuscripts in the 17th cnetury, and the first formal flags was adopted in 1882 after the Croatian National party won the local elections there. He presente also the development in the second half of the 20th century, when flags of various manifestations appeared taking the rule of city flags, since the Split Summer Festival, over the Mediteranean Games 1979 to the 1700 anniversary of the city celebrated from 1955 until 2005. Atthat time the current official flag was adopted as the variation of the anniversary flag. Just as the current coat of arms, that flag did not obtain the approval for use by the central government, after the current regulation requirements – so it remains sort of unofficial flag, at the same time being mostly unknown and unadopted by the PSlit inhabitants for their own symbol.
Announcing the lecture, Heimer held several interviews at the local radio stations – Radio Sunce, Radio Brač, and Radio Split.

Splite, koji barjak viješ?
After the lecture, in its number of 5 May 2019, the Split daily newspapers »Slobodna Dalmacija« issued an article by Damir Šarac: »Splite, koji barjak viješ?« (Split, which flag are you hoisting), sdubtitled »The city has no official flags, and if they would like to change the city symbols, the citizens may expect a ‘painful’ process; The expert reveals what the real flag of Split should look like«
