The book on Macedonian symbols by our member and president of the Macedonian Heraldic Society, Jovan Jonovski, was issued in English in USA by the Flag Heritage Foundation (FHF). It is an adaptation of his doctoral dissertation defended at the University of SS Cyril and Methodius in Skopje in 2018 and published in Macedonian in Skopje 2019.

The English edition of the book was prepared by our well-known friend Edward B. Kaye, secretary of the North American Vexillological Assocation / Association nord-américaine de vexillologie (NAVA), who also edited several English publications of our Association and who is editing English texts for numerous issues of our journal “Grb i zastava”.

The monograph in English was published as the eight volume in the edition The Flag Heritage Foundation Monograph and Translation Series), edited by David F. Phillips since 2009 when it was established. The series aims to publish monographs on flags and related subjects, and to translate and publish in English works previously appearing in languages inaccessible to many scholars.

The English edition of this thesis brings on its 70 pages a dicuission of origins of the sun and the lion as Macedonian symbols from medieval heraldic sources and revolutionary liberation movements flags of the 19th century. It discusses use of these symbols in contemporary coats of arms and flag in the 20th and 21st century in Macedonia and among Macedonian diaspora. FInally, a chapter studies use of lion and sun as political party symbols, in proposals for flag and coat of arms changes and their use as elements in the contemporary Macedonian municipal heraldry and vexillology.
